Sir Christopher Gent - Non-Executive Chairman
Sir Christopher became Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) on 1st January 2005 joining as Non-Executive Deputy Chairman on 1st June 2004. Sir Christopher is the former Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Group Plc. Prior to his retirement from Vodafone in July 2003, he had been a member of its Board since August 1985 and its Chief Executive Officer since January 1997. He was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mannesmann AG; a non-executive director of China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited; and on the Board of Verizon Wireless. Sir Christopher joined Vodafone as Managing Director of Vodafone Limited in January 1985 when the mobile phone service was first launched, and held that position until December 1996.
Prior to joining Vodafone, Sir Christopher was Director of Network Services at ICL. In this role, he was Managing Director of Baric, a computer services company owned jointly by Barclays and ICL, and was responsible for ICL's computer bureau services worldwide.
Sir Christopher served as the National Chairman of the Young Conservatives from 1977 to 1979, and was Vice President of the Computer Services Association Council at the time he left ICL.
He is a non-executive director of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc; a non-executive director of Ferrari spa; a Senior Adviser at Bain & Co; and a member of the Advisory Board of Reform.

JP Garnier is Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline. He
assumed this role in January 2001 with the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome.

Dr Jean-Pierre Garnier - Chief Executive Officer
JP Garnier is Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline. He assumed this role in January 2001 with the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. He joined SmithKline Beecham in 1990 as President of its pharmaceutical business in North America and served as Chairman, Pharmaceuticals from 1994 until his appointment as Chief Operating Officer in 1995. He was elected to the company's Board of Directors in 1992. He became Chief Executive Officer of SmithKline Beecham in April 2000.
Prior to SmithKline Beecham, JP served as President of Schering-Plough's US business. During his 15 years at Schering, he held various management positions, including General Manager of several overseas subsidiaries. In 1983, he joined the US Pharmaceutical Products Division serving as Vice President of Marketing. He was then named Senior Vice President and General Manager of the OTC business and assumed responsibility for sales and marketing for the US prescription business prior to becoming President.
JP serves on the boards of directors of the United Technologies Corporation, Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy and the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships, Inc. In January 1997, JP was selected by President Chirac of France to receive the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Founded in 1802 by France's Emperor Napoleon I, the Légion honours individuals for their civilian or military accomplishments. He was promoted to Officier de la Légion d'Honneur in January 2007. In April 1997, he received from the Cancer Research Institute the Oliver R Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research. In 2001, he was named one of 50 "Stars of Europe" by BusinessWeek magazine and presented with the Marco Polo Award for GlaxoSmithKline's commitment to China. In 2002, he received the Humanitarian Award from the Sabin Vaccine Institute. In 2005, he was presented with the Global Business Leadership Award from Stanford Business School, and awarded the Global Corporate Citizenship Award from AMREF (African Medical and Research Foundation). In 2006, he was named to the global list of top 20 CEOs by the Best Practice Institute and appointed to Gordon Brown's International Business Advisory Council.
JP holds a PhD in pharmacology and an MS in pharmaceutical science from the University of Louis Pasteur in France. As a Fulbright Scholar, he earned an MBA at Stanford University, California, in 1974. In 2002, he was honoured with the Fulbright Association's Lifetime Achievement Medal.
Andrew Witty - CEO Designate
Andrew Witty was named CEO designate for GSK in October 2007 and will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer on 21 May 2008. He is a member of the Board and Corporate Executive Team and previously held the role of President, Pharmaceuticals Europe, for five years. Andrew joined Glaxo in 1985 and held a variety of roles in the UK business. He was a Sales Representative for the Respiratory business, held a variety of Marketing roles and was Director of Pharmacy and Distribution. He has worked in the Company’s International New Products groups, both in the Respiratory and HIV/Infectious disease fields and has been involved in multiple new product development programmes. In 1993, Andrew was appointed Managing Director of Glaxo South Africa and later Area Director for GlaxoWellcome, South and East Africa. Subsequently he moved to North Carolina as Vice President and General Manager, Marketing for GlaxoWellcome Inc., the group’s US subsidiary. Andrew then moved to Singapore and led the Group’s operations in Asia as Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific prior to his appointment to the Corporate Executive Team as President of GSK Europe in 2003.
While in Singapore Andrew was a Board Member of the Singapore Economic Development Board, the Singapore Land Authority and in 2003 was awarded the Public Service Medal by the Government of Singapore. Andrew has served in numerous advisory roles to Governments around the world including South Africa, Singapore, Guangzhou China and the UK. Andrew is currently a Non-Executive Director of the UK’s Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research, sits on the Imperial College Commercialisation Advisory Board, is a member of the Health Innovation Council and is a member of INSEAD UK Council. Andrew has a Joint Honours BA in Economics from the University of Nottingham.

Roy Anderson - Non-Executive Director
Independent Non-Executive Director. Professor Anderson is the Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College, London and, until 30 September 2007, the Chief Scientific Adviser at the Ministry of Defence in the United Kingdom. It was announced on 21 June 2007 that Professor Anderson will succeed Sir Richard Sykes as Rector of Imperial College in the summer of 2008.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and a Foreign Associate Member of the Institute of Medicine at the US National Academy of Sciences.
He has published over 450 scientific papers on the epidemiology, population biology, evolution and control of a wide variety of infectious disease agents, including HIV, BSE, vCJD, parasitic helminths and protozoa, and respiratory tract viral and bacterial infections.
His principal research interests are epidemiology, biomathematics, demography, parasitology, immunology and health economics. He also has a keen interest in science policy and the public understanding of science.
He received a Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours in June 2006.
Dr Stephanie Burns - Non-Executive Director
Independent Non-Executive Director. Dr Burns is Chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dow Corning. She joined Dow Corning in 1983 as a researcher working on water based and high temperature elastomers. She became director of Women's Health in 1994 and subsequently moved into corporate management becoming Science and Technology Director for Europe in 1997. She was first elected to Dow Corning's Board of Directors in December 2000, she was then elected president and chief executive officer in February 2003, Chief Operating Officer in January 2004 and Chairman in January 2006.
Dr Burns holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, with an organosilicon specialty, from Iowa State University. She completed her post-doctoral studies at the Universite Montpellier, Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, France.
She is a board member of the American Chemical Society and The Conference Board and sits on the executive committee of the Society of Chemical Industry. She has also served on the Michigan Molecular Institute.

He spent his early career with Procter and Gamble. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to the information industry.

Julian Heslop assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer for GlaxoSmithKline in April 2005.
Previously, Julian served as Senior Vice President, Operations Controller. In this role, he was a member of the pharmaceutical operating committee and chaired the capital review team. He was appointed to this position following the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham in January 2001, prior to which he was Financial Controller of Glaxo Wellcome.
Julian qualified as a chartered accountant in 1977 whilst working for John M Winter. In 1978 he joined Stoy Hayward as an auditor. He moved to Imperial Brewing and Leisure in 1979 where he worked in a number of management accounting and strategic planning roles. He joined Grand Metropolitan in1986 and held a number of senior roles in their brewing, property and food businesses and was latterly Group Controller. He joined Glaxo Wellcome in 1998.

He is a world-renowned researcher who has advanced knowledge of underlying mechanisms of disease and new therapies for gastrointestinal disorders. He is also an international authority on trefoil proteins and innate immunity. Dr. Podolsky has published and patented widely in his field. He is past editor-in-chief of Gastroenterology, the leading journal in the field, and is immediate Past President of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr Podolsky is also Chairman of the Board & Scientific Co-Founder of the GI Company, a privately held, specialty biopharmaceutical company established to meet the clinical needs and commercial opportunities available in the field of gastrointestinal medicine.

Dr Moncef Slaoui assumed the role of Chairman, Research & Development in June 2006. He is a member of the Corporate Executive team and the Board of GlaxoSmithKline plc.
In his previous position as Senior Vice President, Worldwide business development and external alliances, he served on the R&D Executive team and spearheaded recent changes in R&D to enhance drug discovery and accelerate product development. Previously, in GSK Biologicals, he engineered the development of a robust vaccines pipeline, including Rotarix, to prevent infantile gastroenteritis, and Cervarix, to prevent cervical cancer.
Following a career in academia, he has demonstrated during his 17 years at GSK that he can create a strategic vision and then vigorously pursue it to develop new products that profoundly enhance healthcare.
Moncef earned a PhD in molecular biology and immunology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston. He was a professor of immunology at the University of Mons, Belgium. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and presentations. A citizen of Morocco and Belgium, he is fluent in English, French, and Arabic.
Tom de Swaan - Independent Non-Executive Director
Appointed to the Board on 1 January 2006. Independent Non-Executive Director Tom de Swaan is a member of the Supervisory Board of Van Lanschot NV. He was a member of the managing board and CFO of ABN AMRO, a member of the governing board of the Dutch Central Bank and Chairman of the Basel committee on banking supervision. He is also a Non-Executive Director of the Financial Services Authority and a member of the board of the Institute of International Finance. He holds a master degree in economics.
In accordance with the Combined Code, the Board has determined that Mr de Swaan has recent and relevant financial experience. The Board has also agreed that Mr de Swaan has the appropriate qualifications and background to be an audit committee financial expert in accordance with the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002.
Mr de Swaan succeeded Dr Schmitz as Chairman of the Audit Committee with effect from 1 September 2006.
Chris Viehbacher - President, US Pharmaceuticals
Chris Viehbacher has served as President, US Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline since January 2003. Previously he had been President, Pharmaceuticals Europe, since January 2001. Chris joined the GSK Board of Directors in January 2008.
Chris joined the company when it was Wellcome GmbH, Germany in 1988 as Chief Financial Accountant and was promoted to Finance Director in 1989. From 1993 to 1995, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Burroughs Wellcome Inc., Canada. He joined Glaxo Wellcome France in 1995 as Vice President, Strategy and Integration, following a period based in London as a member of the coordination team during the Glaxo Wellcome integration. In 1996, he became General Manager of Glaxo Wellcome France and the following year was promoted to Chairman and Managing Director.
In 2002, Chris served as one of two industry representatives on the G10 High Level Working Group sponsored by the European Commission to restore the competitiveness of the EU Pharmaceutical Industry.
In 2003, the French Republic recognized Chris with its prestigious Légion d'Honneur award for his contributions to business and healthcare.
Chris resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife Alison and their three children. He is a board member of PhRMA, the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, Research!America, North Carolina Chamber, North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Triangle United Way and the Cardinal Club.
