Paula and Kim have the kind of special bond that only mothers and daughters really understand. When Kim was a little girl, Paula dreamed of watching her grow up and become a mother herself. And she made a promise that she'd be there to help every step of the way. But since being diagnosed with breast cancer, she's worried about being able to keep that promise.
The task facing the scientists and physicians in our Centres of Excellence for Drug Discovery and Worldwide Development group is to create and deliver therapies that could give people like Paula and Kim hope for the future and transform the way cancer is targeted and treated.
Over-expression of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR or ErbB) has been reported in a variety of human tumors and has been associated with a number of negative clinical factors including poor prognosis and reduced survival. Through our research into these receptors we have identified a number of potent ErbB inhibitors that have a selective dual action targeted at tyrosine kinases. Initial clinical studies have shown that orally-administered compounds may achieve their promise in being sufficiently active and well tolerated.
It's our goal not only to develop therapies that are effective and safe, but also to point towards greater precision in the development of future cancer drugs. Every day we take another step towards a world where cancer can be managed and controlled.
This is an exhilarating time to be working in R&D at GlaxoSmithKline, and you could join us on our journey of discovery. If you are interested in finding out more about the science behind ErbB receptor inhibition, 'meeting' some of the scientists involved or job opportunities then visit our R&D pages.
We are also particularly interested to hear from physicians and clinical scientists currently working within oncology who wish to join us in delivering the promise of ErbB receptor inhibition and expanding these therapies to other solid tumours.
