Communications

GSK has a number of different communications departments all of which play a vital role in managing communications both internally and externally.

The Corporate Communications department plays a key role in managing company image and reputation by developing and delivering consistent messages to employees and external audiences through a variety of media.

The opportunities available fall into three main areas:

Communications - Consumer Healthcare (Comms CH) - (you should be studying for a communications, media, PR, journalism, marketing, business, advertising or a combined degree with any of these subjects).

You should also have strong writing skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office competently including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.

Some of the key activities that the candidate would get involved in are:

  • Working with some of the worlds leading household brands including: Aquafresh, Panadol, Beechams, Ribena, Lucozade etc
  • Supporting the comms and marketing teams in preparing PR campaigns, including day to day handling of the media
  • Supporting the comms team in proactive and reactive issues management and crisis handling
  • Co-ordinating events, webcasts and other internal communications activities
  • Research and writing for internal communications channels eg intranet, company magazines etc

Communications - Web and Multimedia (Comms Web) - (you should be studying for a computing, communications, media, multimedia degree or a combined degree with any of these subjects).

You will have strong IT skills and be competent with Microsoft Office, Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and other technologies used for creating and managing websites. Additionally, you should have sound programming skills including XHTML, CSS and an understanding of Web 2.0 technologies.

Some of the key activities that the student would get involved in are:

  • Help to develop and maintain the company's external corporate websites
  • Provide expertise and insight into web-based communications
  • Liaise with GSK's Internet contacts around the world
  • Research issues and topics that affect the business by monitoring websites and other digital media such as blogs
  • Draft web-related stories for the intranet and e-newsletters

Communications - Corporate (Comms Corp) - (you should be studying for a communications, media, PR, journalism, marketing, business, advertising or a combined degree with any of these subjects).

You should also have strong writing skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office competently including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.

Some of the key activities that the candidate would get involved in are:

  • Working within our Global Community Partnerships team or our R&D communications team
  • Co-ordinating events, webcasts and other communications activities
  • Research and write content / stories about our scientific research and our business for our external and internal web sites
  • Drafting and implementing communications plans for specific assigned projects using a variety of comms vehicles and methods
  • Review existing communications and make recommendations on how they could be improved

Communications - Pulse - (you should be studying for a communications, media, PR, journalism, marketing, business, advertising or a combined degree with any of these subjects).

The GSK PULSE Volunteer Partnership is a new initiative that empowers employees to make a significant difference in impoverished communities, at home or abroad. 

Transformational change can happen when employees use, share and pass on their professional skills and knowledge during a 3 – 6 month immersion experience within a non-profit or non-governmental organisation (NGO). The industrial placement role will focus primarily on communication to promote the PULSE programme into the hearts and minds of employees, as well as contributing to selection and deployment of our volunteers.

You should also have strong writing skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office competently including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.

Some of the key activities that the candidate would get involved in are:

  • Create, maintain and review the PULSE internal website content and suggest how we can improve it
  • Research and create web content on the PULSE assignments and achievements, including stories, photos and videos
  • Use new social media to connect PULSE assignees with their home teams and each other
  • Communicate and liaise with internal employees across the globe and our partnering organisations
  • Organise PULSE events and activities, including sending marketing materials to relevant people/organisations
  • Supporting the team with the nomination & screening process of the PULSE applications; including the organisation of the screening process
