The applications for the scholarship award, created to support cutting-edge oncology research in the UK, were reviewed by GSK R&D in the first instance and subsequently evaluated by an independent panel of eminent UK oncology and haematology experts. The five finalists presented their proposals to the judging panel on 30 November 2011 where the successful candidate was selected.

The panel comprised of the following leading cancer researchers and clinicians;

  • Prof Alan Ashworth - Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Professor of Molecular Biology and Leader of the Gene Function team in The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at the ICR.
  • Prof David Cameron - Professor of Oncology University of Edinburgh & Director of Cancer Services, NHS Lothian.

Professor Alan Ashworth speaking of the award said: "Joint industry-academic research efforts are vital in the quest for furthering scientific progress – especially in the current climate. With this award, GSK have created an exciting opportunity to support and showcase cutting-edge UK research and it was fascinating to be involved in the judging process. All the finalist proposals were outstanding in their potential to further scientific progress in cancer research so choosing the final winner was a difficult decision."
