Statistician

University: University of Wales, Swansea
Degree type: 1st class Statistics BSc(Hons)

Tell me about the Statistics Technical Development Programme.
In my first year of the scheme I was given responsibility for mentoring people in technical and quality areas of the business on the appropriate use of statistical tools and software. I led the training of the general use statistical software tool and met a wide variety of people in doing so. In my second year I worked more closely with operational excellence and had more exposure to lean tools. I was also able to develop my experience in designed experiments and measurement systems analysis. I was attracted to the graduate scheme because it promised me a wide range of experiences in different sites across the country which would enable me to develop at a faster pace than I originally would have.

What can I look forward to?
During your time on the graduate scheme, it is likely that you will be based at several sites. You will be given the opportunity to work within a number of different teams and meet a wide variety of people in lots of different roles. Due to the nature of the project teams,  you’ll often have to explain technical statistical analysis to non-statisticians using the appropriate communication tools. Good communication and influencing skills are invaluable in this role.

One of the best things is the support offered
by other graduates on the programme.

What kind of support will I receive?
One of the best things about the graduate scheme is the amount of support offered by other graduates on the programme. As a group, we met up regularly and supported each other professionally. The statistics community works closely together and there is always another statistician on the end of the phone ready to offer support and advice.

What does it lead on to?
I see myself continuing in the statistical field within GSK, but maybe with more of an emphasis on lean tools. If you’re a resilient team player who’s willing to learn and keen to apply their statistics theory to real life situations and real people then GSK is for you.
