GlaxoSmithKline is a world leader in the discovery of prescription medicines. Drug discovery is data driven; statisticians design and analyse scientific experiments to obtain the information which is necessary to support major decisions. GlaxoSmithKline employs more than 200 professional statisticians worldwide.
They apply their mathematical and statistical knowledge in an exciting and challenging career, which will ultimately lead to the production of major new medicines.
To have sufficient knowledge to work as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry, students studying for a first degree will usually need to complete an MSc in statistics. GlaxoSmithKline considers it important to invest in the education of statisticians and will provide scholarships to enable students to study for an MSc during the 2007/2006 academic year. (Note that sponsorships for the 2006/007academic year have been awarded.) These will consist of a maintenance grant (at least equivalent to that paid by government funding agencies) together with all fulltime study fees*. Scholarship holders may wish to apply for employment at GlaxoSmithKline at the conclusion of the course, and will be considered for vacancies at that time.
Scholarships will be available to study on the courses shown below. All these courses provide advanced training in statistical theory and practice. Further information about the courses can be obtained from the appropriate websites:
To be considered for a scholarship, you will have obtained or be expecting to obtain an upper second or first class honours degree in mathematics or statistics or in a subject with a substantial mathematics/statistics content.
For further information, please contact the appropriate university contacts or visit their websites.
* All applications are welcome. However, please note we are only able to cover the equivalent of UK/EU course fees.
