Developing our people

We are committed to development. We want our people to achieve their personal aspirations and ambitions, to perform as well as they can and realise their full potential.

You’ll be responsible for driving your own development - we will give you every support to do just that. Once you have settled in, we’ll do everything we can to help you to develop your individual strengths and maybe discover some hidden talents along with the way. We call it our ‘differentiated development’ approach, tailoring your development to you.

What learning opportunities can I expect?

We believe that some experiences contribute more to learning and growth than others. By focusing on these in a planned way, we can help drive your development. Your learning will be broken down as follows:

  • On-the-job experiences (70%) – stretch assignments, increasing the scope of your role, new projects within your role or going on secondment. You’ll be encouraged to agree development objectives with your manager, enabling you to achieve your full potential.
  • Developmental relationships (20%) – opportunities to get support and feedback from those around you. This may come from your manager, peers, mentor or coach.
  • Formal development (10%) – a small amount of what we learn is gained through formal development – for example, e-learning, coursework, programmes, classroom-style training, articles or books. We provide online performance support, self-assessment tools and resources to enable you to develop.

We offer opportunities that cover the 70%, 20% and 10%. To get the most from your development, your manager will work with you to focus your development activities on the 70% and the 20%, to support you in achieving your performance objectives and to challenge you to achieve your best.

What individual support can I expect?

You’ll have regular, high-quality performance and development planning discussions with your manager. These discussions will be open and honest, and a fundamental part of your career development. They will focus on your aspirations, skills, experience and development needs. This will ensure that your personal objectives are fully aligned to our business objectives. We are committed to giving you the support you need to help you to deliver your best performance and develop within our business.

How can my career develop?

Career development is not only important to you; it’s also crucial to our success, both now and in the future. How well you perform, the skills and experience you offer the business and your personal motivation will all influence how your career develops.

It’s important to remember that careers may take many different directions and flexibility is key. Playing to your strengths and motivations and meeting the needs of the business are critical for our combined success.

Be prepared to seek new and stretching experiences to develop yourself. Career development is all about building your experience and capability levels for the future. Ultimately, careers are built on sustained delivery of results, demonstrations of leadership, and displaying our behaviours and values.

Your contribution, skill development and passion will determine where you go and what you do.
