GlaxoSmithKline's European community programmes focus on children's health. They are selected using the criteria of need, sustainability, leverage, measurable outcomes, partnership and innovation, all of which ensure they have the best chance of creating maximum benefit. Since the emphasis is placed on process-driven management, these criteria also ensure that successful programmes can, if appropriate, be reproduced in other, similar communities.

Hole in The Wall Camps
The Hole In The Wall (HITW) Camps are the world’s largest family of medically based therapeutic Camps for children with serious illnesses and life threatening conditions. The first Hole In The Wall Camp was founded by Paul Newman in 1988 in Ashford, US and there are now 10 Camps in operation across the US and Europe with 8 more in development in the US, Africa and Asia.
GSK is the largest corporate donor of the HITW and has been a partner since 1994 when the first camp in Europe in Barretstown, Ireland was opened. GSK has contributed over $9million, including forward commitments for new camps.
In addition to cash contributions, GSK has developed close relationships with the camps where they operate and has provided in-kind additional support in the form of volunteers, professional expertise and materials.
