GSK responds to the May 2008 earthquake in China

16 May 2008
The earthquake which hit Sichuan Province on Monday 12 May has left over 20,000 confirmed dead, though this figure could be as high as 50,000. At least 10 million people have been affected and many people have fled the regions where 200,000 homes have been devastated and more than four million homes damaged. People are living in refugee camps with limited supplies of food, shelter and water.

GSK HK/China has given a cash donation of 10 million Yuan, approximately $1.4m, to the China Red Cross and is in daily contact with the Ministry of Health to monitor healthcare needs. Currently the major need is blood and many of our employees are making blood donations. We expect requests for antibiotics and other medicines, which will be provided as appropriate.

Employees who wish to make personal donations have been directed to the International Federation of the Red Cross.
