2008 Weybridge LOCAL Health Awards

GSK Weybridge are once again delighted to announce the five winning local charities who have all received a £5,000 Health Award in 2008 for their work to improve the physical, emotional or mental health of people in their local communities.

The Weybridge GSK 2008 Health Awards Winners, each received £5,000, they included:

Early Births Fund, St Peter’s Hospital
Staff at St Peter's HospitalA charitable group of St Peters Hospital staff who raise money for the Neo Natal Unit at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey. Money raised is largely used to purchase specialist equipment over and above that provided by NHS funding. Some of the babies go home from the Unit still needing oxygen and parents need reassurance and want to make sure they know what to do. The group intend to use the Award to train parents in resuscitation methods including respiratory and cardiac and how to deal with choking.

CHASE Hospice Care for Children
Staff at CHASE HospiceSupporting families with a life-limited child who is not expected to live beyond the age of 19. CHASE has a team of specialist community nurses who look after the children in their own homes and Christopher’s Hospice in Guildford offers short breaks, emergency and end of life care. Caring for a life-limited child can be mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting.  Short breaks allow families time to rest, relax and recuperate. Each family are offered 15 nights per year, free of charge with 24 hour one-to-one nursing care for their child. The £5,000 Award from GSK will cover the cost of 11 families staying for one night at Christopher’s Hospice.

Special Olympics Surrey
Participants in the Special Olympics SurreyProviding year round sports training and competition in all the Surrey Boroughs for people with a physical or learning disability. Giving the opportunity to develop physical fitness and raise self esteem. The group will use the Health Award to increase sports facilities as well as to set up Sports Taster Sessions throughout Surrey to encourage more people with disabilities to try different sports.

Equipment for Disabled Children
Volunteers at the EDCThe charity was founded by Dr Helen Foley 18 years ago to help raise funds to buy equipment not provided by state funding which help to foster independence, mobility and enrich the lives of local disabled children. All of the board are volunteers so that every penny of the cash raised goes to the charity. The Award will purchase urgently needed equipment for which it is difficult to get funding. Some of their clients have short life expectancy and the group have limited time to raise funds from other sources.

The Fountain Centre, St Luke’s Cancer Centre
A cancer patient at the Fountain CentreA support and information drop-in centre for cancer patients and their families, focusing on the patient rather than the illness. The Centre has around 95 volunteers, 63 of whom are highly trained and qualified complementary therapists offering therapies such as massage, reflexology, shiatsu and acupuncture to help with the side effects of treatment. The Centre helps cancer patients to learn new life skills and find a new focus despite disabilities and social isolation.

The 2007 Weybridge LOCAL Health Awards winners were:

Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC)
RASASC support male and female survivors of rape and sexual abuse providing help-lines, face to face counselling, self-help support groups, support sessions for family, partners and friends helping victims. Their Health Award will fund core costs and help RASASC create tailor-made talks, training courses and workshops to other organisations, schools and colleges.

Guildford & Waverley Cruse Bereavement Care
Aiming to help children and adults through bereavement by providing information and support through individual counselling and support groups. The Award will be used to fund a bereavement group and counselling.

Winners of the 2007 Weybridge LOCAL Health AwardsRunnymede Dolphins
An assisted swimming charity giving clients with physical disabilities or chronic diseases such as MS, Parkinson's, arthritis, stroke, the chance to swim in a safe and friendly environment. Qualified physiotherapists support the Dolphins and develop programmes designed to encourage maximum mobility. Their Award will buy a mobile hoist enabling physically disabled clients to change into swimming costumes quickly and easily ensuring more pool time will be available to them.

Elmbridge Community Link
The Elmbridge Community Link work with over 130 adults and young people with a learning difficulty in the local borough, helping members develop new and existing skills to empower and help them gain self-esteem and confidence. Their Award will fund a part time support worker to facilitate a Soft Indoor Sports project and Community Living projects for healthy eating and exercise.

Sam Beare Hospice
The Sam Beare Hospice work to improve the conditions of life for their clients and their families, providing respite care, terminal care, pain and symptom control and counselling for both patients and families, support in the patients own home and full palliative day care facilities. Their Award will go towards the salary of a Palliative Care Staff Nurse at the Sam Beare Hospice.
