When I was younger I suffered from a skin condition that affected my self-esteem. With severe eczema on my face, I got used to people staring at me or treating me differently.

After living with this for a few years, my doctor introduced me to a treatment that has made my skin look better ever since. People don’t stare at me anymore. I’m not exaggerating when I say it has transformed my life, and showed me the importance healthcare products can play in the everyday lives of people.

Fast-forward a few years and here I am at GSK, proud to be working on consumer healthcare products that I know will make a difference to the quality of life for other people, just like they have for me.

GSK’s culture of innovation and technology to address specific consumer needs is what most attracted me to apply to the Future Leaders Programme (FLP). The other big appeal was the rotational structure, designed specifically to expose you to different aspects of a successful, global business.

My FLP experiences so far have taught me many skills that I can take forward in my career, from strategic thinking and coaching, to negotiating and selling. Best of all though has been the confidence I’ve gained through learning to focus on my goals and believe in myself.

My area of interest is marketing, so since starting the FLP in July 2015, I’ve enjoyed different aspects of this world. From joining expert marketing and then managing advertising campaign for our Polident brand with the marketing team, to being a sales representative to our retail and pharmacy customers. Along the way, I’ve collected valuable experience in skin care trade marketing and the finance department.

One project, however, stands out as a highlight for me. We were introducing permanent Dermo Consultants (DCs) for the very first time in South East Asia (in-store experts who can advise customers on the skincare products). As the project manager, it was my job to recruit these people, train them, coach them and monitor their performance. Quite a big challenge for someone, like me, who had no previous experience to call upon!

But I’m pleased to report it was a great success! The initiative resulted in an 85% increase average sale in DC stores and contributed to an increase of 45% to new users as well.

Even more rewarding though was the personal impact. One girl who applied to the DC programme had zero sales experience in skin care category – but I saw potential and the spirit to be a great DC. So I took a risk and recruited her and she was very eager to learn and performed amazingly. Before I finished the rotation, she came to me to thank me for what a difference this opportunity had made to her and her family. This was definitely my proudest moment.
