Application Process

We have developed a robust selection process to make sure that GSK is the right place for you.

You’ll find an explanation of the process below, but please note that not every country follows every stage of the process.

We strongly encourage you to apply as early as possible when the Esprit positions start accepting applications to avoid disappointment.

1. Application form

The first step is to fill out our application form online. Think about your responses carefully and take time to provide us with a detailed description of your skills, experiences and ambitions.

You’ll be asked to demonstrate that you have the qualifications we’re looking for and tell us some practical things, like whether you’re eligible to work in the country your programme will be based in. Our recruitment teams will be checking through your application form, so it’s important the information you give us is accurate.

We’ll also ask you to tell us why it is that you want to join us. This gives you the chance to show us what drives you and just how motivated you are. Make it past this stage, and we may invite you to take some online tests.

Some tips:

Do your research. We want to hear why you want to work for us. Tell us what it is about GSK, and the programme you’ve selected, that made you want to work for us.

Update your CV. It’s likely you’ll be asked to provide a CV so don’t forget to write this as clearly and accurately as you can.

Be accurate. Ensure that you meet the essential criteria for the programme that you are applying to and that you provide this information accurately. Please note that if you do not meet the essential requirements of the programme that you may receive an automatic response declining your application.

2. Online tests

In some countries, we ask you to take online tests to give us a better idea of your strengths and suitability for the programme. The tests are not timed and you will usually be given a few days in which to complete them.

You may be asked to complete our Values Fit Assessment, which we’ve designed to help us select people who’ll naturally fit into our business. You might also need to take tests that measure your verbal and numerical reasoning. In some cases, you could be asked to take a test that assesses the many different personality traits linked with successful leaders. Remember, don’t try and guess what we are looking for, just be yourself.

When you have completed the online tests required of you, we’ll review the results and then let you know whether you can advance to the next stage: a first round interview.

Some tips:

Get familiar with tests. If you are invited to complete the cognitive ability tests, put some time aside to complete some practice tests. This will help you perform at your very best.

Read the instructions. If you are invited to complete an online test make sure you take time to read the instructions. Be aware of deadlines. There will be an expiry date from which you can no longer take the online tests. Be aware of it.

Take your time. The tests aren’t time constrained so don’t rush. However, if you feel you require any reasonable adjustments to complete the online tests, be sure to contact a member of the GSK team.

3. First round interview

To get a good understanding of you as an individual, we’ll invite you to an interview. Interviews may take place on the telephone, face to face or via a video call.

But whichever form it takes, it will help us to get to know you better. Essentially, this is your chance to tell us directly about who you are, what you know and why you’re the right person to join us. It will also give us a valuable insight into the skills relevant for the role and what drives you.

Some tips:

Stay focused on yourself. When sharing your experiences, remember to tell us what you actually did, not what your ‘manager’ or ‘colleague’ did or ‘we’ did.

Setting. If your interview is via video or over the phone, make sure that you’re in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.

4. Assessment Centre

If you’ve been successful in the first three stages, we’ll invite you to our assessment centre. You’ll spend a day and a half taking part in activities that give you a flavour of what it’s like to work in our world-leading healthcare organisation. You’ll also get the opportunity to meet our employees and learn more about what we do.

During your time here, we’ll ask you to take part in two group exercises and a one-to-one role-playing exercise. You’ll also be asked to give a presentation. Finally, you’ll also have a face-to-face interview. It’s all designed to bring out the best in you, and show you why GSK is such an exceptional place to work.

Our assessment centre is a two-way process and we want to make sure it’s a valuable experience for everyone. For you, it’s the chance to ask us questions, meet potential future colleagues and see our working culture for yourself. For us, it’s an exceptional opportunity to see how you respond to a wide range of challenges and situations.

5. Making you an offer

If you perform well at the assessment centre and meet our criteria, we’ll make you an offer to join our Esprit programme. We take this process very seriously, and will support you through the offer process as best we can.

Whatever the result, we’ll give you feedback on your performance at this stage. We recognise the time and effort you have spent with us and want to make it a useful learning experience.

If you’ve met all our criteria, we’ll make you an offer of employment and start talking to you about the practical steps you’ll need to take next. We’ll use everything we’ve learned about you throughout the application process to make sure you get off to the best possible start in your future career.
