Stakeholder Communication

 |
We maintain an active dialogue with our internal stakeholders,
our employees and managers, to share with them the information necessary
to integrate EHS considerations into all aspects of the business
and their jobs and responsibilities. We communicate with EHS professionals
at sites through meetings, email, an intranet site dedicated to
EHS issues and documents. These EHS professionals review and add
value to the development of the Framework, including the Standards,
guidelines and tools, to the EHS Plan for Excellence, to target
setting and to all aspects of the EHS programme. Most GlaxoSmithKline
operations have consultative committees to ensure employees have
input to EHS issues, including trade unions where workers are unionised.
There is also an ongoing dialogue with external stakeholders, including
representatives from government, investors, customers, suppliers
and non-governmental organisations. In September 2003 we held a
workshop to review our EHS Plan for Excellence, with particular
emphasis on our plans for Producer Responsibilities, Sustainable
Development and Corporate Reporting. Feedback was generally very
positive on the plan that is being undertaken and on the quality
of EHS reporting. The external stakeholders expressed concern that
the presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment posed a business
risk that should be addressed. They also considered that GSK should
have clear policies on the use of hazardous chemicals and on the
future use of energy, and should define more clearly how it will
move towards environmental sustainability. The key issues highlighted
in the discussions have been included in our work plans for 2004.
Forum for the Future has provided an
external stakeholder's perspective on this report.
We partner with a number of environmental NGOs for mutual benefit.
Examples include sponsoring Green Alliance in a project to raise
awareness of the links between environment and health, funding
Earthwatch to send schoolteachers on conservation projects in
the UK, and sponsorship
of the biodiversity festival "Go Wild" at the Royal Botanic Gardens,
Kew.
We participate in many surveys of our EHS practices
and performance for investment management companies and rating organisations.
The Business in the Environment survey rated GlaxoSmithKline first
in the pharmaceutical sector for the third year rating us in the
Premier League of companies with a score of over 96%. We are included
in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and in the UK FTSE 4Good and
we work closely with major socially responsible investment groups
in the UK.
In addition to the stakeholder dialogue conducted by Corporate
Environment, Health and Safety on behalf of the corporation, many
of our operations have continuing dialogue with their neighbours
and communities through newsletters, open days and outreach projects.
There are regular contacts with regulators and local authorities
with a number of GlaxoSmithKline's EHS specialists serving on official
committees and working groups to help develop better regulations
for the future.

GlaxoSmithKline was the top pharmaceutical company for the third year in the 2003
Business in the Environment (BiE) Index of Corporate
Environmental Engagement. We achieved Premier League status among the entire field of 177 participating companies with a score over 96%. The Index gives us an excellent way to benchmark the results of our structured approach to managing EHS issues. |

In 2003/2004, GlaxoSmithKline adopted the Carbon
Trust's Carbon Management approach in both the Primary
Supply and Consumer Healthcare manufacturing organisations.
We benefited from Action Energy funded technical
advice on HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning),
one of the most promising areas for savings and working
with Carbon Trust we were able to accelerate the
take-up of energy efficiency measures and to focus
our efforts on addressing the most energy intensive
processes. |
