Environment, Health and Safety Costs
Capital investment projects include projects related to designing, siting and installing systems related to wastewater treatment, waste management and treatment and air pollution control. In 2003, there was a sharp decrease in capital investment due primarily to conclusion of a major wastewater treatment plant expansion and upgrade project at one of our large primary manufacturing sites. Significant expenditures had been made on this project in 2001 and 2002.

Charts:

Capital Investment
Chart: Capital Investment Capital investment for EHS projects totalled £10.5 million in 2003 a decrease of 43% from £18.3 million in 2002. A primary manufacturing site completed a large-scale wastewater treatment upgrade in 2002. In addition, during 2003, GSK continued to streamline the network of manufacturing sites. This rationalisation effort and general cost control measures contributed to the decrease in capital investment.

Operations and Maintenance Costs
Chart: Operations and Maintenance Costs

GSK manufacturing and research & development operations spent £39.1 million, which represents a 17% decrease in operation and maintenance expenditure. This decrease was due, in part, to the decreased operation of wastewater treatment plants at two large manufacturing sites. In addition, incinerator use decreased at another manufacturing site due to a decrease in production.

History of data changes
In 2002, we reported that GlaxoSmithKline manufacturing and research & development operations spent £45.5 million for operations and maintenance costs associated with EHS. Due to improved reporting, this figure was revised to £46.9 million.
