Energy Consumption
GSK sets a target to decrease energy consumption from non-transport
activities. This measure is defined as all energy consumed at GSK
facilities during the year in the form of electricity and steam
imported and fuels burned in fixed combustion equipment on site,
including emergency generators. Fuels used for onsite transport
have not been included but fuels used to generate steam and electricity
onsite have been included.

In 2003, GSK consumed 19.7 million gigajoules of
energy for non-transport activities representing a 2%
decrease in energy consumption compared to 2002. Fuel
burned to support manufacturing processes, heat buildings
and for other uses not related to transportation accounts
for nearly 58% of total energy consumption. Forty-one
percent (41%) of energy is electricity imported. This
energy source ratio is nearly the same as in 2002 with
only a slight increase in the percent of energy from
electricity as compared to fuels.
The energy consumed for GSK operations worldwide in 2003
is equivalent to the energy consumed in one year by approximately
220,000 UK households.

In 2001 we set a target to reduce energy consumption from site activities by 8% on a per unit sales basis by the end of 2005 and we have met that target in 2003.

History of data changes
The 2001 baseline originally reported
for energy consumption was 21.4 million gigajoules. This included
energy from onsite transport fuels and energy generated onsite from
fuels. In 2002, we revised the 2001 baseline to 20.7 million gigajoules
because we removed the fuels used for onsite transport and corrected
the previous double counting of fuels used onsite to generate electricity
and steam. Due to additional reporting improvements in 2003, this
2001 baseline was again slightly adjusted to 20.6 million gigajoules
