Hazardous waste disposed represents total hazardous waste generated that was not reused, recovered or recycled. Bioengineered and biohazardous wastes are included in hazardous waste. Most hazardous waste is composed of waste solvents.

For 2003, we experienced a 1.7% decrease with 60.8 million kilograms of hazardous waste disposed. Eighty percent (80%) of the total hazardous waste disposed in 2003 was solvent waste, 17% was general site waste and the remaining 3% was chemical, biological or radiological waste. In 2003, over 44% of all hazardous waste disposed was treated to obtain beneficial energy or resource recovery, down from 46% in 2002. However, the amount of hazardous waste going to landfill has decreased by 32% from 2002 to 2003 due in part to better waste classification and use.

In 2001 we set a target to reduce hazardous waste disposed by 15% on a per unit sales basis by the end of 2005. While some progress is being made this is an area where we will need to focus some effort if we are to succeed in reaching the 2005 hazardous waste disposal improvement target.

History of data changes
In 2003, one key primary site improved their reporting by identifying waste streams that had not been previously considered and began reporting these hazardous waste streams correctly in 2003. They were able to provide related waste data for 2001 and 2002 so that we could adjust the baseline and previous year's data to provide accurate comparisons. The 2001 baseline is now 63.2 million kilograms and the revised 2002 amount of hazardous waste disposed was 61.9 million kilograms. We also removed demolition and construction waste from hazardous waste.
