In 2003 Plan Sudan, part of the child-focussed development organisation Plan International, joined forces with GSK and the National Malaria Administration of Sudan to form an initiative designed to reduce malarial morbidity and mortality rates in the White Nile State. Through the promotion of appropriate behaviour and practice the programme aimed to cut the prevalence of malaria by 10 per cent in 372 communities along the eastern bank of the White Nile River, covering over 670,000 people.

Local community groups and organisations were also involved in the programme’s implementation so that the widest range of skills and experience could be used to maximise the programme’s impact and ensure its sustainability beyond the period covered by the GSK African Malaria partnership grant.
Civil war, floods and difficulties getting to parts of the country have hampered progress with this programme, but the work continues where possible and the communities we reach benefit from measures to protect them from malaria.
