Frostbite ends 2005 attempt. Mogens Jensen was forced to abandon his first attempt to climb Everest last year 400m from the peak because of frostbite.

"I lost feeling in my toes. I had the choice of going to summit and returning without my toes, or turning back with my toes and trying again this year," says Mogens.

"It was a painful choice, but it was realistic to turn around. I'm not making excuses, but last year was the worst Everest weather for 15 years."

For his 2006 attempt, Mogens is wearing a pair of special soles in his climbing boots - they have inbuilt battery-charged heating elements.

Everest history

There are many 'firsts' and other milestones in the history of successful (and unsuccessful) Everest climbs. Among them are the first blind person (in 2001), the oldest person (aged 70), the youngest (15), the first couple to be married on the summit (in 2005), and the number of ascents by one person (13)..
