The Positive Action at Work project is all about helping companies to implement their comprehensive policies on HIV and AIDS - policies that cover care and treatment as well as education and prevention. Our focus is on tackling the stigma and discrimination that can undermine those policies and the first materials to be developed include information, education and peer education resources. These resources have been developed with employees in Africa, Mexico, and India and are available in several languages: English; French; Latin American Spanish; Swahili; Hindi plus a number of Indian languages.
Basic information presented positively
If you are intent on tackling stigma you may wish to review the materials you currently use to promote HIV awareness and prevention. It is possible that they use fear or negative images to put their message across. Positive Action at Work attempts to present information about HIV and AIDS in ways that do not reinforce stigma. A series of posters that inform, use positive images and provide talking points for employees can also be downloaded. You can even tackle stigma directly with employees using one of our Work Cards to help them understand stigma and the role they can play in overcoming it. Trainers and managers can also use the Peer Educator Diary to prepare presentations and exercises.
Peer educators
Not all employers can adopt the peer education method, but those who can do so in recognition of the unique strengths of this form of HIV prevention, including the ways such programmes can build and become semi-autonomous. Documents are available to help you use peer education to tackle stigma, these can be found through the links below.
