Sharing knowledge through partnerships
Sharing knowledge through partnerships
We actively seek alliances with other specialist organisations to accelerate the discovery of new medicines and vaccines, share scientific understanding, and ultimately improve patient care.
Our main areas of collaboration include research into:
- drug discovery
- biotechnology
- neglected tropical diseases
- identifying patient safety issues
- rare diseases
We also fund basic medical research conducted outside the company – in academic, charitable and other partner institutions - to increase understanding of the human body and the impact of disease.
Partnerships with academic institutions
We have established over 360 research partnerships with universities and academic institutions globally. We also provide support for science students through fellowships and other awards. This helps advance scientific understanding and capability, and gives us access to R&D expertise outside of GSK. It also expands our potential recruitment pool of trained scientists, while our academic partners benefit from having access to our research facilities, technology and expertise.
We are always seeking to contribute to the widening of scientific knowledge. To this end we make the findings from much of our collaborative work available in scientific journals. In 2010, GSK scientists were listed as co-authors in collaborative research in more than 1500 publications.
