We maintain an active dialogue with our internal stakeholders, our employees and managers, to share with them the information necessary to integrate EHS considerations into all aspects of the business and their jobs and responsibilities. We communicate with EHS professionals at sites through meetings, email, and an intranet site dedicated to EHS issues and documents. These EHS professionals review and add value to the development of the Framework, including the Standards, guidelines, tools, the EHS Plan for Excellence, target setting and to all aspects of the EHS programmes. Most GlaxoSmithKline operations have consultative committees to ensure employees in general have input to EHS issues, including trade unions where workers are unionised.
There is also an ongoing dialogue with external stakeholders, including representatives from government, investors, customers, suppliers and non-governmental organisations. Our stakeholder dialogue processes have been assisted by The Environment Council, an independent charity that brings together people from all sectors to develop long term solutions to environmental issues.
We partner with a number of environmental NGO’s for mutual benefit. Current partnerships include the sustainability organisation Forum for the Future, and the environmental organisation, Earthwatch Institute (Europe). GlaxoSmithKline is a member of Earthwatch’s Corporate Environmental Responsibility Group.
We are also members of a number of not-for-profit industry groupings that seek to advance EHS issues, including the Global Environmental Management Initiative and the UK’s Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Our advocacy activities in EHS are undertaken primarily through membership of trade associations. We are active members of the pharmaceutical trade organisations including PhRMA in the US, EFPIA in Europe and ABPI in the UK. We also participate in a number of broader industry groups such as the Confederation of British Industry and the UK Chemical Industries Association.
We review and comment on many government proposals on EHS. In these cases, our company positions are made publicly available, usually through the government body concerned.
Many of our sites also engage with stakeholders locally, for example, through open days, newsletters and community projects.
