Patient groups

British Lung Foundation (BLF)

The BLF supports people affected by lung disease through the individual challenges they face. Support is the focus of many of its activities, including a nationwide network of Breathe Easy patient support groups and Baby Breathe Easy parent support groups.

The BLF aims to help people understand their condition by providing comprehensive and clear information and works for positive change in lung health through campaigning, raising awareness and funding world class research.

We have supported this organisation since 1994.

During 2007:

  • We gave an educational grant of £200,000 to support the BLF's “Future Development Project” providing the infrastructure to support the development of the National Service Framework for COPD.  We are committed to providing £200,000 each year to continue this association until 31st December 2009.
  • We supported the BLF/GSK Chair of Epidemiological Respiratory Research at Edinburgh University. We are committed to providing £35,000 each year to continue this association until 2010.
  • We gave two Medical Fellowship grants to 'Breathe Easy North Hertfordshire' - £1000 to support the production of a COPD patient DVD and £300 to support to support two separate presentations on COPD Patient Perspective to medical representatives and medical practitioners in April 2007.
  • We awarded 20 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the BLF, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at either the American Thoracic Society (ATS) or the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress. These fellowships totalling £15,000 are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.

Our support represents 4.58 per cent of their overall funding.

In addition, we awarded four Research Fellowships under the auspices of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, payable to individual research doctors, to support the attendance of one research doctor at ATS and three at ERS.  The BLF administer these Research Fellowships totalling £3,000 on behalf of the BPRS.
