Patient group funding

International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF)

IOF's goal is to advance the understanding of osteoporosis and to promote prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease worldwide.

We have supported this organisation since 2002.

During 2010:

  • We gave an unrestricted grant of $ 640,000 to support the IOF campaign aimed at exploring the challenges of the communication between patients and healthcare professionals.
  • In addition we gave an educational grant of $105,000 to help support a number of their projects.

Our support represents 5% of their overall income.



During 2008:

  • We gave an educational grant of €69,750 to the 'Invest in Your Bones' initiative - a campaign designed to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy bones. 
  •  In addition we gave educational grants of
            (i) €7,500 to help support the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) 
            (ii) €7,500 to support an international campaign, ‘Staying Power’, which aims to raise awareness of the global implications and significant personal, social and economic costs associated with patients not staying on their treatment.  

Our support represents 6.55% of their income.



During 2007:

  • We gave an educational grant of €21,604 to support an international campaign, ‘Staying Power’, which aims to raise awareness of the global implications and significant personal, social and economic costs associated with patients not staying on their treatment. 
  • We gave an educational grant of $75,000 to support the World Wide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies held in Miami Florida in Dec 07. Additionally we gave an educational grant of $37,500 to support x 3 communication grants as awards for best practice as judged by the IOF and presented at the conference. These grants are used for the development of effective communications campaigns that stimulate increased awareness of osteoporosis.   

Our funding represents 2% of their income overall.



In 2006:

Scientific activities:

  • IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis (IOF WCO), the largest world congress dedicated to osteoporosis.
  • A quarterly review journal, 'Progress in Osteoporosis', for physicians involved in the management of diagnosis.

Patient advocacy, support and educational activities:

  • Membership in the IOF Committee of Corporate Advisors
  • Membership on IOF 'Invest in Your Bones' committee - a group which works to improve access to and reimbursement of diagnosis and proven therapies for individuals at high risk of fracture.
  • Unrestricted educational grant for the provision of communications grants to IOF member societies. These grants are used for the development of effective communications campaigns that stimulate increased awareness of osteoporosis.
  • Unrestricted educational grant for an international campaign, 'Staying Power', which aims to raise awareness of the global implications and significant personal, social and economic costs associated with patients not staying on their treatment.
  • Participation in the IOF Corporate Responsibility Program for Bone Health, which promotes bone health for staff.
