British Lung Foundation (BLF)
One person in seven in the UK is affected by a lung disease. The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity working for people with lung problems and they do this through research, education, support and care.
The BLF’s mission is to support people affected by lung disease and bring about positive change to improve treatment, care and services across the UK.
We have supported this organisation since 1994.
During 2010:
- We gave £125,000 to support the BLF "Future Development Project". This represented Year 1 funding and we have committed to support the same sum in 2011, however this funding will be dependent on a review of Year 1 objectives.
- We gave £1,200 to support three BLF Midlands Committee meetings during 2010.
- We gave £500 to 'Breathe Easy Middlesex’ for two members’ participation in “living with respiratory disease” discussions at five GSK Initial Training Programmes held at Stockley Park for new staff during the year.
- We paid an honorarium of £1,500 to Dame Helena Shovelton, payable to the BLF, for a presentation at a GSK sponsored symposium at the European Respiratory Society meeting in September 2010.
- We paid £4,999.63 towards dinner and booking of the venue for a COPD parliamentary dinner on 16 November 2010.
- We paid an honorarium of £350 for a speaker, Dr James Cant, Head of BLF Scotland and Northern Ireland, to give a presentation at the World COPD Day event on 17 November 2010.
- We gave £850 as sponsorship of a World COPD evening on 17 November 2010 towards refreshments and costs of preparation of a briefing pack.
- We awarded 20 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the BLF, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at either the American Thoracic Society (ATS) or the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress. These fellowships totalling £15,000 are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.
- We paid £480 (+VAT) to purchase of 100 copies of the "Commissioning Excellence in COPD" book.
- We paid £4,000 (+VAT) for hire of space, furniture and running costs of the British Meeting Point to be held at the ATS meeting in Denver, Colorado in 2011.
Our support represents 1.6% of the BLF’s overall income in 2010.
In addition, we awarded 4 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at ATS or ERS. The BLF administer these Research Fellowships totalling £3,000 on behalf of the BPRS.
During 2009:
- We supported the BLF/GSK Chair of Epidemiological Respiratory Research at Edinburgh University. This is the final donation of £35,000 for this position.
- We gave £100 to 'Breathe Easy North Hertfordshire' for a ‘Living with COPD’ patient talk on 11 December 2008.
- We gave £500 to support the BLF Nurse Study Day held on 3 February 2009.
- We gave £2,500 as speaker honoraria for the BLF “Advances in Respiratory Medicine” meeting held on 1 April 2009.
- We gave £1,000 to 'Breathe Easy Hertford' for a “Focus on the Patient” event at GSK Ware on 8 and 11 May 2009.
- We gave £1,200 to support three BLF Midlands Committee meetings during 2009.
- We gave £500 to 'Breathe Easy Middlesex’ for two patients’ participation in COPD discussions at five GSK Initial Training Programmes held at Stockley Park for new staff during the year.
- We gave £300 to BLF Wales towards a BLF Breakfast meeting at the Welsh Assembly on World COPD Day, 18 November 2009.
- We gave £6,000 to BLF Scotland & Northern Ireland to support the post of a Band 7 Respiratory Nurse Specialist.
- We awarded 20 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the BLF, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at either the American Thoracic Society (ATS) or the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress. These fellowships totalling £15,000 are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.
Our support represents 1.2% of the BLF’s overall income.
In addition, we awarded 4 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at ATS or ERS. The BLF administer these Research Fellowships totalling £3,000 on behalf of the BPRS.
During 2008:
- We gave £150 to Age Concern Gwent in respect of a speaker fee for a presentation given at a GSK organised meeting ‘A Unified Approach to Patient Care’ on 27 November 2008.
- We gave an educational grant of £400,000 to support the BLF's “Future Development Project” providing the infrastructure to support the development of the National Service Framework for COPD. This represents £200,000 for our support in 2008 and the additional £200,000 is our contribution for 2009.
- We supported the BLF/GSK Chair of Epidemiological Respiratory Research at Edinburgh University. We are committed to providing £35,000 each year to continue this association until 2010.
- We purchased BLF COPD leaflets and self-management plans at a cost of £338,000 for onward distribution to healthcare professionals by GSK staff
- We gave £2,500 as speaker honoraria for the BLF “Advances in Respiratory Medicine” meeting held on 14 October 2008.
- We gave £150 to 'Breathe Easy North Hertfordshire' for a COPD patient perspective presentation at an evening meeting on 14 November 2007.
- We gave £500 to 'Breathe Easy Hertford' for a “Focus on the Patient” event at GSK Stevenage in February 2008.
- We gave £300 to 'Breathe Easy Middlesex’ for 2 patients’ participation in COPD discussions at the GSK Initial Training Programme for Respiratory Care Associates at Stockley Park on 28 July, 15 October and 2 December 2008.
- We gave £150 to “Friends of the BLF” as a speaker honorarium for a presentation given at a meeting on 4 March 2008.
- We awarded 20 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the BLF, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at either the American Thoracic Society (ATS) or the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congresses. These fellowships totalling £15,000 are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.
Our support represents 14.39% of the BLF’s overall funding.
In addition, we awarded four Research Fellowships under the auspices of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, payable to individual research doctors, to support the attendance of one research doctor at ATS and three at ERS. The BLF administer these Research Fellowships totalling £3,000 on behalf of the BPRS.
During 2007:
- We gave an educational grant of £200,000 to support the BLF's “Future Development Project” providing the infrastructure to support the development of the National Service Framework for COPD. We are committed to providing £200,000 each year to continue this association until 31st December 2009.
- We supported the BLF/GSK Chair of Epidemiological Respiratory Research at Edinburgh University. We are committed to providing £35,000 each year to continue this association until 2010.
- We gave two Medical Fellowship grants to 'Breathe Easy North Hertfordshire' - £1000 to support the production of a COPD patient DVD and £300 to support to support two separate presentations on COPD Patient Perspective to medical representatives and medical practitioners in April 2007.
- We awarded 20 Research Fellowships under the auspices of the BLF, payable to individual research doctors, to support their attendance at either the American Thoracic Society (ATS) or the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress. These fellowships totalling £15,000 are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.
Our support represents 4.58% of their overall funding.
In addition, we awarded four Research Fellowships under the auspices of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, payable to individual research doctors, to support the attendance of one research doctor at ATS and three at ERS. The BLF administer these Research Fellowships totalling £3,000 on behalf of the BPRS.
In 2006:
- We supported the BLF/ GSK Chair of Epidemiological Respiratory Research at Edinburgh University, we are committed to providing £35,000 each year to continue this association until 2010.
- We gave educational grants of £7,185 to support attendance of one staff member at the American Thoracic Society & European Respiratory Society International congress.
- We awarded research fellowships totalling £18,000 to support the attendance of 24 research doctors at the European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society congresses. These fellowships are awarded to doctors in an open process in order that they can continue to attend these congresses to discuss cutting edge research and outcomes.
- We gave £11,714 to support the BLF receptions at the ATS and ERS International congress.
- We gave an educational grant of £7,500 to support a Parliamentary reception at Westminster and the Welsh Assembly on the occasion of World COPD Day.
- GSK gave a £500 educational grant to support the Global Burden of COPD Summit at the American Thoracic Society meeting.
Our funding represents 2.1% of their overall income.
