Undergraduate engineering and manufacturing placements

Every year, we spend £3 billion on products that help people around the world do more, feel better and live longer. Global manufacturing and supply (GMS) is responsible for our entire portfolio of pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare products. With a global network of 85 sites in 37 countries, we deliver 1,200 branded products to 140 markets worldwide.

What will the programme be like?

An engineering and manufacturing placement allows undergraduates to come into contact with top-quality people, processes and technology.

You’ll be joining a well-developed scheme that places great emphasis on both training and individual development, getting a taste of graduate life here. During your year with us, you’ll gain first-hand experience of manufacturing, developing your understanding of how different sites operate, putting academic theory into practice and taking responsibility for your own projects. All this will build up your technical knowledge, as well as developing your communication, planning, organising, problem-solving, team-working and networking skills.

Do I have the skills?

You should have achieved or be on course for a minimum 2:1 degree, Masters or PhD in one of the areas described in the table below.
You must be studying a sandwich degree course and an industrial placement must be seen as a recognised sandwich year of your course. Leadership potential, resilience and genuine enthusiasm for the healthcare industry are also needed.

Placement field Required area of study
Automation/controls engineering electronic engineering, electronic/electrical engineering, automation engineering, controls engineering, computer systems engineering, control systems engineering, systems engineering, instrumentation engineering, manufacturing systems engineering, process systems engineering – or similar (combined degrees are acceptable)
Chemical engineering chemical engineering, process engineering, bio processing engineering, bio chemical engineering, or environmental chemical engineering, materials science or equivalent (combined degrees are acceptable)
Chemical process engineering chemical engineering, process engineering, bio processing engineering, bio chemical engineering, or environmental chemical engineering, materials science or equivalent (combined degrees are acceptable)
Electrical engineering electronic/electrical engineering, integrated engineering, innovation or manufacturing engineering, engineering management (combined degrees are acceptable)
Mechanical engineering mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering, building engineering, combined engineering studies, design engineering, energy engineering, general engineering, management engineering, plant engineering, process engineering, product engineering, production engineering, project engineering, mechatronic engineering, innovation and engineering design, manufacturing engineering, maintenance engineering – or similar (combined degrees are acceptable)

How can I apply?

Applications are now closed for our programmes starting in 2013. Details of the 2014 programmes will be posted in September 2013.
