Scientists in Sport

Scientists in Sport is our UK science education programme. The aim of the programme is to work with teachers to help inspire 11-14 year old students to continue their science studies. The programme has been designed to use the power and excitement of sport to showcase real-world science.

Scientists in Sport began in 2012 with a programme inspired by our partnership with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over 10,000 students across the UK took part in our 2012 programme, which included an ‘Anti-doping Challenge’ competition.

In 2013 the programme is being re-launched with new interactive resources for teachers that will help students to explore how science is being used by athletes and their coaches to analyse and enhance their sporting performance.

As part of our ongoing strategic partnership with the McLaren Group, the Scientists in Sport programme for 2013 also incorporates activities that look at the science behind the sport of Formula 1TM, including a ‘Fast Forward Challenge’ competition. The competition launched at the Big Bang Fair, a science fair attended by around 60,000 secondary schools students and their teachers, in London on 14 March 2013.
