Scope - The INSPIRE Project
Scope is a leading disability charity that has a vision for a world where disabled people have the same opportunities to fulfil their life ambitions as non-disabled people. GSK has worked in partnership with Scope since 2008, sponsoring the Parent Information Pack – a vital resource that has supported thousands of parents whose children have been diagnosed with cerebal palsy.
Scope operates a number of services for young disabled people with a range of complex physical and learning needs such as cerebral palsy, physical and sensory disabilities, acquired brain injuries and autism. The largest of these is Beaumont College, a specialist further education college based in Lancaster.
In 2010 Scope and GSK launched the Life Skills project at Beaumont College. Encompassing two distinct programmes ‘Continence Management’ and ‘Plan, Shop, Cook!’, the Life Skills project has supported the team at Beaumont College to become leaders in their field and win national health awards, as well as enabling students to gain formal qualifications.
To build on this success, GSK is supporting the INSPIRE project, a programme that integrates sensory therapy techniques designed to support the increasing number of autistic students with sensory processing disorders and those with physical impairments such as cerebral palsy. The project, spanning three years, will help students manage their conditions long term by introducing a range of sensory techniques and train staff at Beaumont College across a range of disciplines.
