Diagnosing hepatitis
Diagnosis is usually simple for all forms of Hepatitis, with blood tests almost always able to identify which form of the disease is present. In serious cases a liver biopsy may be performed and can also confirm these results.
Treating hepatitis
Hepatitis is generally treated by “supportive care”. If the infected person becomes extremely unwell then medicines may be used. Rest is accepted as one effective treatment for jaundice. In severe infection or after chronic disease, the liver may be damaged severely, so a transplant may be undertaken. Medicines are now available to treat chronic hepatitis where it has been shown that the liver is being damaged by the virus.
