\nI feel like I was a researcher from birth. At GSK, I get to apply this curiosity to the early stages of projects to make an impact at improving global health. I’m Lais Nascimento Alves and I'm a scientist at the Global Health team, here in GSK, in Siena and I work mostly with infectious diseases that affect low- and middle-income countries.
\nAt GSK, we focus on who the patients are, how the disease affects them and how they can get access to healthcare so we can reach them in the right way, with innovative medicines and vaccines. I love this Japanese philosophy called ‘Ikigai’ because it helped me realise what my purpose is which for me, is to be part of a team that will help people who need it the most.
\nl came from Brazil, and I did my PhD, and I joined GSK through the scientific leaders programme that gave me the opportunity to train not only in the research part, but also in what it takes to become a great leader. I was raised by a single mum, and I had the opportunity of caring for her for about ten years before she passed to cancer. I don’t despise the disease because it gave me the chance to see her not only as a parent, but also as a friend.
\nAt GSK, our culture is really inclusive, it encourages us to keep learning and developing. We have fun every day, in what we do. We tend to do a lot of activities outside of the lab and we go around this beautiful city, and we enjoy each other’s company. My mum got to witness the direction that I was taking with my life and I know she would be very proud of where I am today, and what I’ve achieved for myself. At GSK, I have this ambition to give back to the world what was given to me. For me, that’s what gives me purpose, profoundly.

","transcript":"Happiness is about purpose. What is behind what you do? I'm very proud of what we have built here for almost fifty years. We are part of the history of a very small town in Spain, in the middle of the countryside. My name is Carolina Sanchez-Cespedes and I’m the site director of GSK at Aranda in Spain.
\nAranda is part of the GSK global supply chain network. I see my role as to remove the roadblocks for the people working here. We manufacture three types of products: oral solid doses, specifically tablets, inhaled liquids, and metered-dose inhalers. We manufacture these at a very massive scale, around 180 million packs a year. It’s a lot of packs! GSK are working on new vaccines, medicines, and on a new generation of low carbon inhalers. We apply breakthrough technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and we apply this with science and the talent of the people working here. 100% of our electricity comes from renewable sources and in fact, 30% of that is produced with our solar panels.
\nAt the same time, we are volunteering many activities around sustainability, and we are triggering a little bit of this also in the community. GSK is super ingrained in Aranda, which is beautiful to see, no? We are also having a very close connection with some of the regional universities and in fact, this is a source of talent. We are basically looking for the fresh talent that is going to bring more products to more patients in the future. I studied pharmacy because my great grandfather studied pharmacy, so it was kind of a tradition in my family. I started working for a small pharmacy shop and one of the things I really loved was to have this close patient connection. And when I think about what I’m doing here at GSK, I feel that I’m helping patients at a bigger scale. Our products are helping millions of people with very severe conditions, and I think it's one of the things that makes this site special.

","transcript":"My mum was a nurse when she came here from Tanzania. She'd always bring stuff from work, and I found that really interesting, so I went into pharmacy. When I realised that I could actually specialise in HIV as a pharmacist, I was so happy. I've had family members who have passed in sub-Saharan Africa. My mum supports a number of children that are living without their parents because of HIV. So, when I first started going out and supporting the community groups I realised, this has always been what I've wanted to do.
\nMy name is Ama Appiah, and I work in Patient Engagement at ViiV. In South East London there's an African diaspora, there's a West Indian diaspora. Sharing your HIV status is such a big issue in the African community. You're trying to say that, no, this isn't going to be the end. This is the start of starting again. You can forget all of the shame or the stigma associated with what you think HIV is and just sort of grow from that. I left the NHS because I really wanted to do more. At ViiV, I'm surrounded by people driven by the same purpose and that is to end HIV. When I see the impact it’s when people talk about being able to be given a voice. It is my purpose to make sure that they are able to go on and do what they need to do to live their best life, to live their full life without anything holding them back.
\nThere's a lot of things going on in my life. I've got three kids; I currently have my mother living with me. I love to see things grow, through the gardening, through the nurturing of my family. It's all helping me to understand who I am. My sister and I taught ourselves how to roller-skate when we were younger. So, I bought myself some skates and I've not looked back. It's so freeing to be able to just feel like a kid again. So, for me the future of HIV is a world where through the innovations that we’ve got, people will no longer be born with HIV, and no one will be passing on HIV. We will have a generation free of HIV, and that’s what we should all be striving for.

\nGSK enables me to prioritise my family as well as other interests that I have.
\nI'm putting together a 1948 Plymouth Coupe Deluxe. My kids call the car Miss Tiny. Miss Tiny Nesbitt is the car's full name.
\nMy passion for technology has absolutely brushed off on my kids.
\nI got a whole small little dev shop at home.
\nWhat drives me is to leave the world better for my children than how I found it.
\nAnd the work I do at GSK profoundly enables me to do that because of the impact it has on so many people around the world.

Since losing his father to cancer, it’s been Tom’s passion to prevent others going through the same pain.
","transcript":"It's been over twenty years since I lost my father to lung cancer. Since that day, I've been working to prevent others from going through the same pain that I did. I'm Tom Southgate, I'm a Medicine Development Leader for one of GSK's immuno-oncology assets.
\r\nThe immune system is the most perfectly imperfect system. It wouldn't work if it was perfect because it needs to be balanced. Cancer is an unbalancing of the system, and what we try to do with our immuno-oncology drugs is to rebalance the system so that we can recognize and target the cancer cells and kill them.
\r\nThe use of AI and Machine Learning is making a massive difference in terms of our ability to understand the mechanisms of disease and deliver medicines and vaccines to patients faster. But any tech tool needs the right people to get the right answers, and we have the best people here at GSK.
\r\nHaving a diverse team is key. I'm on the neurodiverse spectrum because I'm dyslexic, and I know that you want to have ideas coming from all different viewpoints and bring them together into a melting pot, which delivers those new ideas of medicine development.
\r\nIn the fifteen years I've been here, I've gone from a bench scientist to a Vice President of a medicine leading it through the clinic. I've had the opportunity and the development, and now I give those opportunities to others.
\r\nMy dad wasn't a scientist; he was a teacher. I suppose I'm trying to do the same, working with amazing people from students starting their journeys to old men like myself. Outside of delivering medicines, it is the piece of my job I value the most.
\r\nWe are making huge strides in cancer treatment for patients. We will actually get the key results of our phase three trial exactly twenty-five years to the day since I buried my father. I think he would've been incredibly proud.
\r\nThis isn't just me; this is a huge team effort across the whole of GSK to bring these transformational medicines to patients. It is incredible what we can achieve together, and I'm intensely proud to be a part of it.

\r\nSo it's working with a lot of laboratory automation and machines that can do hundreds or thousands of samples within a short period of time. I love the team that I'm on. The support network is great.
\r\nYou have access to GSK teams globally that have worked on different assays and different instrumentation, and can really help you to succeed. And more than that, the effort that you're all putting in is very important for global health.
\r\nAt GSK there's very flexible hours. I do a lot of music, acapella, ukulele, so it's great that I can go home and dive into one of my other passion projects.

\r\nI'm Martha Hayward. I'm Sarah Hassett. We met on the GSK Engineering Grad Scheme. We're based at one of our manufacturing sites in Scotland. We're part of the team leading the transition to renewable energy.
\r\nI'm working on transitioning to our new 23-hectare solar farm and wind turbines, and looking at how we can better meter that energy. And I'm modelling the site's energy consumption to map it up with our renewable energy, to drive future sustainability projects.
\r\nAt GSK, if you have a great idea, it's so easy to get support and turn it into action. We spend a lot of time together working on our sustainability grassroots group that we set up. It's all about initiatives that help us reach our sustainability targets, including eliminating single-use plastics by 2030.
\r\nWe provided free menstrual cups. We've also organised tree plantings and beach cleans. It's a really great way to get outdoors and do something positive for the planet. The work we're doing together is really making a difference, and it feels good to be part of that.

\r\nI'm Zack Oblak, I'm a Scientific Director in the drug substance and development group at GSK. I had a fantastic high school chemistry teacher, who brought math and science to life for me, and really showed us that it's all around us.
\r\nThe first time I walked into GSK was about ten years ago for an interview, and from that time, I've worked on a tremendous number of great projects using the principles of green chemistry.
\r\nAny time we do chemistry, we impact the environment. We devise creative solutions to minimise waste and reduce the amount of energy that we use for making medicines and vaccines. That's better for the planet and our patients, and it's great to know that we're at the cutting edge.
\r\nI get to spend the day with really high calibre scientists, and I get to play with some really cool toys in the lab. But what really matters is keeping our planet safe for our kids, and that's what really motivates me.

","transcript":"I'm currently training for my eighth marathon. I get a lot of ideas when I'm running, I like to think about how we can make that next leap in technology and science.
\r\nI'm Ram Vankina. I'm a principal automation systems engineer. For engineers like me GSK is a playground. I get to put systems in place to make sure we manufacture vaccines the right way, and we have all the data to back it up.
\r\nDue to automation, the process that used to take weeks and months, now we go to the next step within days and hours, which ultimately helps us to bring the medicines and the vaccines to the patients faster.
\r\nGSK offers me the breadth of expertise and talent across the different groups that I can bounce ideas against and learn from. And ultimately, it's all about making a difference in people's lives.
\r\nThere have been times where I had to work from home for a parent-teacher’s conference, or my kid is sick and I can take that time off whenever I need it, and if you're a new dad, GSK offers an 18-week parental leave policy, which is a great benefit to have.

","transcript":"I was ten years of age and there were some cases of hepatitis at the school. My dad explained to me that the vaccine will train my immune system. I thought, wow, if this really exists, we can have vaccines against all diseases. And since then, I knew I wanted to become a scientist.
\r\nI am Angeles Caregido, and I work as a scientific director at GSK. As a child I liked to go to the beach, and sit there looking at the sea, and wonder about the mysteries of the universe.
\r\nI have a masters in protein chemistry, I graduated with the highest honors. But, during my first year at the university, my aunt passed away, because of a disease with no cure. She was like a mother to me, she was so proud. I made a promise to her. I promised her that I would become a scientist working to improve the health of people, and I always keep my promises.
\r\nGSK was clear from the beginning. We are working with state of the art science. It's also about why we do it, right? We have the privilege to work with really outstanding professionals from different backgrounds, different expertise, but with a common purpose of trying to help people. And that is really where magic happens.
\r\nMy family is my source of energy. When I finish the day at work, I can really spend time with my family and stay closer to them. I have two kids, Javier and Ariana. My husband Paco, and one star my first son, Antonio, died, just before birth. That was for me, a very hard time. No one is prepared for that.
\r\nCreativity helped me, to go through that journey, and connect with myself and find peace. I was writing at the time, an inspiration of writing a fairy tale to explain the mourning process to help other families that were navigating a similar situation.
\r\nI really believe that it is in our hands to transform difficult experiences into something beautiful that can be valuable for other people. When I look back into my life and I connect the dots, I can see how my personal experiences inspire my career path.
