Patient-focused research and development is central to our work. Every hour we spend over £300,000 researching new medicines, vaccines and other products. Our scientists are looking to find treatments to address respiratory illnesses, viral and bacterial infections, diabetes, cancer and HIV/AIDS.

We want people who are passionate about improving lives through scientific innovation: those who combine scientific or medical expertise with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Whatever your field of scientific or medical expertise, you must be prepared to keep learning and evolving.
You should be curious about how you fit into the bigger R&D picture, and able to adapt in a constantly changing scientific and business environment. The relationship-building skills to work with commercial colleagues will be important. You must also share our values: transparency, respect for people, integrity and patient focus. Above all, we need scientists who not only focus on what they do, but how they do it.
Opportunities exist for R&D scientists in all three of our businesses: Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Consumer Healthcare.
Our R&D organisation attracts scientists from most disciplines including chemists, biologists, statisticians, pharmacologists and microbiologists. They work as bench scientists in the lab, or apply their scientific training to clinical trials, regulatory work, studies of health economics or statistics.
Physician scientists in research and physicians in our medical teams provide medical guidance on use of our medicines once these have been approved for use in patients. We have whole teams of people dedicated to monitoring the safety or our medicines. Other scientists or physicians monitor the quality of our research and ensure that we adhere to the highest standards of governance.

Pathologists are integral to our R&D organisation. We rely on their expertise to help our understanding of disease biology and evaluate models of human disease. They help safeguard human health by contributing critically important information and representation on multi-disciplinary teams which assess the nonclinical safety of novel compounds as these medicines progress to patients and regulatory approval.
Areas of opportunity
Our pathologists take a highly collaborative approach when assessing the safety and efficacy of our compounds. As project and discovery-enabling pathologists, they have a strong sense of ownership in helping take new target ideas and candidate molecules from early discovery all the way to regulatory approval and ultimately to improving the lives of patients.
Our vision for pathology is to continue to expand our contributions beyond traditional toxicological pathology to help support decisions in discovery research across the full biologic spectrum of efficacy and safety. The stereotypical image of a lone number-crunching statistician listing and summarising masses of data or providing sample size calculations is well and truly extinct from GSK. A statistician at our company is an innovator and influential drug developer whose skills are highly valued and in great demand at all levels across our R&D organisation.
The 350 or so statisticians and programmers in our business are key players in all areas of R&D, from the initial identification of a molecule right through to the manufacture and commercialisation of a medicine. Their work underpins our ability to make high quality decisions leading to lower late-phase attrition and reliable/cost-effective manufacturing processes.

Cell and gene therapy represents a significant departure from traditional drug discovery and development activities whereby a ‘small white pill’ is manufactured in large quantities and prescribed to patients through their pharmacy. Yet the field is rapidly maturing: the potential of modifying a patient’s own cells and highly specialised medical procedures to combat a range of diseases treat individuals has the potential to deliver curative or at least substantive, long-lasting benefits to patients through a single administration.
Since 2010, GSK has partnered with the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (TIGET), a world-leading research centre for stem cell gene therapy in Italy, for the development of ex vivo stem cell gene therapies in rare monogenic disorders. Working alongside TIGET to advance their research, GSK has brought in our expertise in medicines development, manufacturing/supply and the global regulatory environment. This year the partnership reached a significant milestone in the regulatory approval of the first gene therapy to treat very rare disease, ADA-SCID. This is the first corrective ex vivo stem cell therapy for children to achieve regulatory approval anywhere in the world.

Areas of opportunity
Excited by this ‘world-first’, we are investing significantly in the development of world class R&D and commercial supply capabilities for cell and gene therapies. Our desire is to make these innovative treatments available to as many patients as possible; and to expand such therapies to diseases beyond rare disorders (e.g. oncology, chronic auto-immune and metabolic disorders). Therefore, the Cell & Gene Therapy Platform organisation was established alongside our other major platforms: small molecules and biopharmaceuticals. Platforms support GSK Therapy Areas Units to discover, test and manufacture compounds up to product launch.
From the onset our vision for the Cell & Gene Therapy Platform has been to develop an end-to-end organisation, integrating discovery, development and supply functions. This ensures that ground-breaking Cell and Gene Therapy medicines are seamlessly and expertly discovered developed and manufactured for clinical development and beyond. Organisationally the Cell & Gene Therapy Platform is composed of 4 functions: Discovery Research, Process Development, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Operations and Systems/Quality & Risk Management.
This ground-breaking area of science requires specialised skills and experience to discover new gene-mediated therapeutic interventions, rapidly progress assets to clinical development, harness novel technologies (for example for gene delivery), establish new production techniques, engage regulatory authorities on development and registration strategies, address meet logistical challenges in the supply chain and identify ways means to cost-effectively scale-up a complex product development process. All these elements are critical to making this modality therapy technology a reality for realizing our ambition to bring affordable cures / long-lasting benefits for many patients.
As opportunities in this field continue to emerge in areas beyond rare disease and cancer, our vision is for cell and gene therapy to stand alongside the more commonly used small molecule and biopharmaceutical approaches in the development of medicines.
