I’m Ben and I’m on the Procurement Future Leaders programme, based at GSK House. Whilst studying Business Management at the University of York, I was fortunate enough to work for GSK as a placement student before then joining them as a graduate. Deciding to work for GSK was a natural choice for me, they are a pharmaceutical company who proudly lead the way with their culture and values.

Learning to be a Future Leader

The Procurement programme is spread across two years and includes four rotations, lasting six months each. This gives each of us the opportunity to experience a wide breadth of category areas and different leadership styles. My current rotation is with the Sales Procurement team, it’s been extremely interesting learning about how GSK functions commercially, and how procurement support such an important and complex part of the business.

Being in the procurement business, you need to be good with people, which is a vital skill to develop as a leader within any organisation. Building long lasting and valuable relationships really can take you a long way. The rotations on the programme have really encouraged independent and creative ways of tackling problems as I’ve explored different areas of the business.

During my first rotation, I certainly didn’t have a lack of exposure to how procurement works, as I dived straight into managing a tender for the business! One of my most exciting responsibilities has been to run something called an e-Auction. Technology has advanced all industries across the world, and in procurement we leverage the use of e-Auction platforms, which allows suppliers to auction against each other in order to compete for business contracts.

It’s just the tip of the iceberg of what we do and are capable of doing. Every day, we are partnering with our stakeholders to drive strong performance and innovation in the business, challenging ideas and looking at ways to do things differently.

GSK’s values stay strong to its heart; it’s a company with a proud diversity in the people they invest in.

Why here?

GSK is a company that I warmed to very quickly from day one. Its values are strong, it’s a company with a proud diversity in the people they invest in and it’s a place where you can develop and grow and be recognised for your achievements.

Looking ahead…

Looking ahead, I’m eager to work abroad with GSK! Being such a global company with offices almost everywhere, there’s real opportunity out there to live abroad and experience new cultures. GSK also do a lot of inspiring charitable programmes which aim to help local communities or raise money for charities which undoubtedly, I’d love to be a part of.
